The Tour Championship is the final event of the season on the PGA Tour schedule. The limited field of 30 players is composed of the top 30 highest earners on the money list for the season. Golf fans have been treated to quality winners over the last few years and it’s time to look back on these wins.

Over the past five years, the Tour Championship has produced high-profile winners who were icons before their win or became one through their victory at the tournament. Looking back on their victory, we’ve highlighted one club out of each one of the winner’s bags that could benefit other golfers.

This Tour Championship Winners retrospective will focus on:

  • The five previous winners of the tournament
  • The golf clubs they used to win the tournament
  • How each of these golf clubs can help you out on the golf course

TaylorMade M2 2017 Driver

Club of choice for: Xander Schauffele, 2017 Champion

The TaylorMade M2 2017 driver was all the rage when it was released in 2017. Incredibly, the quality of this club is still up to par as Justin Rose was seen using this driver and its fairway wood companion at the 2021 Masters.

Back in 2017, the club was a favorite amongst TaylorMade-sponsored pros and Xander Schauffele, who played with TaylorMade clubs at the time, was also a fan of the M2 2017 model. Schauffele was able to overcome the odds and win the Tour Championship, all the while he was still a rookie on the PGA Tour.

What you’ll like about the TaylorMade M2 2017 driver:

  • A large clubhead that’ll put you at ease at address
  • An adjustable weight at the back of the sole to promote a higher launch at impact
  • Elongated clubhead that allows for more forgiveness, even on off-centered strikes

Titleist 915F Fairway Wood

Club of choice for: Patrick Cantlay, 2021 Champion

The most recent winner of the event, Cantlay peaked at the ideal moment as he collected back-to-back playoff victories. After winning the BMW Championship the week prior in Maryland, Cantlay brought back his pint-point accuracy to collect a second title in as many weeks.

Cantlay’s ability to control the flight of the golf ball allowed him to make his way around the course at East Lake, especially with his Titleist 915F fairway wood which is the perfect club to shape the ball trajectory off the tee. It might be a few years old, but the 915F is still a world-class golf club.

What you’ll like about the Titleist 915F fairway wood:

  • Classic glossy finish on the top of the clubhead to help you focus on the shot at hand
  • An adjustable weight near the front of the sole to promote more control over the golf ball
  • Thin, yet strong, club face to maximize ball speed across the surface of the face

TaylorMade SIM Max Fairway Wood

Club of choice for: Dustin Johnson, 2020 Champion

Dustin Johnson had quite the 2020 calendar year when it came to golf. The PGA veteran collected a green jacket and victory at the 2020 Tour Championship. Notable for using the same equipment for a long time, Johnson’s bag content was the same for both events.

Johnson used his SIM Max fairway wood to make his way around the golf course at East Lake and did the same in November at Augusta. Johnson’s power, combined with the forgiveness of the SIM Max fairway wood made for the perfect blend for the tournament.

What you’ll like about the TaylorMade SIM Max fairway wood:

  • Highly forgiving on off-centered strikes
  • The Twist Face technology will keep your strikes straighter than ever
  • Lowered CG in the clubhead making it easier to send the ball in the air

TaylorMade TW – Phase 1 Prototype Irons

Club of choice for: Tiger Woods, 2018 Champion

Tiger Woods provided fans with an early look at what was to come a few months later in Augusta as he managed to best the rest of the field at the 2018 Tour Championship. The victory gave Tiger his first win in over 5 years and kicked off a streak of three wins in just over a year.

At the time of his victory at East Lake, Tiger was still using a prototype model of irons, but these have since been released. These irons are now marked as the TaylorMade P7TW in honor of the man who inspired their creation.

What you’ll like about the TaylorMade P7TW irons:

  • Unmatchable feel for the ball impact
  • Perfect strikes are rewarded with plenty of spin on the ball
  • Sleek and classy look that’ll remind you of older blade irons

TaylorMade Milled Grind Wedges

Club of choice for: Dustin Johnson, Rory McIlroy, Tiger Woods

The TaylorMade Milled Grind wedges were featured in the bag of three consecutive Tour Championship winners as Woods kicked things off with his 2018 victory. Rory McIlroy and Johnson followed suit in 2019 and 2020 respectively.

The Milled Grind wedges were the first version of the wedges that have now become a staple amongst TaylorMade-sponsored golfers. The first Milled Grind model offered golfers a great wedge that provided plenty of spin upon impact and is even available in the Raw version that will naturally rust over time.

What you’ll like about the TaylorMade Milled Grind wedges:

  • Large clubface that responds well even on off-centered strikes
  • Milled grind sole which allows the club to cut through the longer blades of grass
  • Versatile bounce that will come in handy from any ball position

TaylorMade Spider X Putter

Club of choice for: Rory McIlroy, 2019 Champion

The TaylorMade Spider X putter had become a favorite for McIlroy who has had this putter in the bag for all his victories since his triumph at the 2019 Tour Championship. Known for using a blade-style putter for a long time, McIlroy’s change came as a surprise for many.

Based on his results with the putter, it’s safe to say that McIlroy has made the right decision by going with the mallet-style putter. On top of making for a simpler straight back and forth swing, the Spider X offers more forgiveness than a putter with a slimmer profile.

What you’ll like about the TaylorMade Spider X putter:

  • High level of forgiveness on impact, especially on off-centered strikes
  • A larger clubhead that provides more power upon impact
  • Balanced clubhead allows for more control over the movement of the clubhead in your swing
